Twitter is a hellscape, I know. If I didn’t have to be on there for work, I wouldn’t be.
This week, a video of Minneapolis kids getting awards, smiling, cheering, and being proud of each other went viral. And somehow, some annoying right-wing troll looked at that joy and tried to turn it into fear. It gained 4 MILLION IMPRESSIONS, pushing people to see these poor, innocent kids as a threat.
It reminds me of a time during my junior year in high school. An SRO/Middle school teacher walks into our English class during a discussion about islamophobia, and he just stands in the back listening in and eventually chimes in to say
“Islamophobia isn’t real. It is not a thing. Show me where it is in the dictionary.” The class erupted, and he just walked out.
I remember just sitting there, thinking, how can someone be around us every day and still not see the BS we face?
What scares me most is how normal this is starting to feel. How often do these posts appear now? How much hateful graffiti shows up in our community? How silent folks are while this rhetoric gets worse? How many in this city, our leaders, our neighbors, watch it happen like it’s nothing? Do folks not see these internet trolls pull up and shove a camera in people’s faces?
These are real kids. They’re OUR kids. And they deserve joy, safety, and not to be dehumanized for clicks.
This is not normal, guys.
ON A LIGHTER NOTE: WOMEN’S SPORTS ARE FEEDING US THIS WEEKEND
College basketball is back with USC vs. USC, a top-10 showdown. Seeing Juju coach Jazzy on the sideline was cool. I can’t wait to see them finally play together next year. Two great teams, two great coaches. A fun game to watch
Then the NWSL semifinals: literally the last four champions going head-to-head.
We got a minute of Trinity Rodman, the spirit still won 2-0, heading to the championship game. The league should do everything it can to keep Rodman stateside, though. We can’t afford to keep losing top-tier talent to greedy Chelsea. (Unless she’s going to Arsenal, then I’d take that)
Marta is still cooking with Orlando, going against the stacked Gotham today, who are fresh off sending KC packing (bye bye Vlatko, respectfully). Please give us what we want, PKs!!
Just a fun, chaotic weekend for women’s sports, and yes, I am absolutely USWNT-pilled in all my analysis.
